Fire Prevention Tips:

What can you do to keep your home safe?

Escape Plan: What would you do if your smoke detector sounded?  Would your family do the same thing?

  • Put together a fire escape plan for your home - it's easy!
  • Identify two escape routes for each member of your household.  Make sure they are not blocked and doors or windows are easily opened.
  • Select one outside meeting place (mailbox, end of driveway, neighbor's home).  Make sure everyone in the household knows not to return to the house for a favorite toy or to search for a pet.
  • Review the escape plan with each member of the household.
  • Practice the escape plan.
  • For more tips visit: the National Fire Protection Association

Stay low or crawl when exiting a burning building.

Children and Fire:

  • Explain and practice what they should do if their clothing catches on fire - Stop, Drop and Roll.
  • Explain why it is important to crawl or to stay low when exiting a burning building.  (See photograph above.)
  • Make sure they know to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.
  • Matches, lighters and candles: talk to your children about fire safety.  Click here for more information.
  • Review your fire escape plan and the meeting place.

Smoke Detectors:

  • Install smoke detectors in your home.  At a minimum one detector on each level of the home and outside of each bedroom.  Click here for more information.
  • After you've installed your smoke detectors, make sure you test them frequently throughout the year and replace batteries twice a year.

Chimneys:

  • Do you heat your home using wood, pellet or coal stoves, fireplaces or non-direct vent gas or oil systems?  If you have a chimney, have it inspected once a year by a professional chimney sweep. Click here for more information.
